Trends in Endogenous Endophthalmitis in Rural and Urban Settings in the United States

The study aimed to compare cases of endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) in urban and rural areas in the United States using data from the 2002-2014 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database. EE cases were defined as endophthalmitis in the setting of bacteremia or candidemia without recent ocular trauma. Of the 8255 cases identified, 93.7% occurred in urban areas and 6.3% in rural areas. Candida EE was observed more in urban cases than in rural cases. Urban hospitals performed more pars plana vitrectomies than rural hospitals. The findings suggest that there are important differences in EE cases that present in urban and rural hospitals that require further investigation to develop a targeted approach to treating EE.
