
A study investigated the relationship between thyroid hormones—TSH, FT3, and FT4—and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Analyzing 1,216 patients, the study found that elevated TSH and reduced FT3 levels were associated with higher prevalence of albuminuria and decreased eGFR. TSH positively correlated with urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and negatively with eGFR, while FT3 showed the opposite correlations. The prevalence of albuminuria and reduced eGFR increased with higher TSH levels and lower FT3 levels. Both TSH and FT3 were linked to worsened UACR and eGFR after adjusting for various factors, with FT3 demonstrating a higher predictive value for DKD (AUC 0.64) compared to TSH (AUC 0.61).
