TSLP Induces Epithelial–Mesenchymal Transition in Nasal Epithelial Cells From Allergic Rhinitis Patients Through TGF-β1/Smad2/3 Signaling

Airway remodeling, a key feature of allergic rhinitis (AR) in Asian patients, involves the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) mechanism. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) plays a significant role in this process. The study aimed to explore TSLP's impact on human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) from AR patients. Results showed that TSLP triggered an increase in TGF-β1 expression, leading to EMT in HNECs, as indicated by changes in EMT markers and extracellular matrix components. However, preincubation with a selective TGF-β1 receptor inhibitor reversed these effects, suggesting TSLP as a potential target to inhibit EMT and reduce airway remodeling in AR.
