Tumor Size as a Predictor of Growth Rate and Intervention in Small Renal Masses

The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between tumor size and growth rate (GR) in patients with small renal masses (SRMs) managed by active surveillance (AS). Data from the DISSRM registry revealed that larger tumor sizes were independent predictors of both GR events and delayed interventions (DI). A growth rate event was defined as a tumor growing more than 0.5 cm per year. The study found that a 2.9 cm tumor size cutoff was particularly informative for patient counseling, as it was strongly associated with GR events and DI. The findings underscore the importance of monitoring tumor size in managing SRMs under AS.
