Type 1 Diabetes in Children: Oral Health Risks Linked to Glycemic Control

A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the impact of type 1 diabetes on children's oral health, focusing on DMFT index, salivary function, and periodontal status. Thirty-three studies were analyzed, revealing no significant differences in plaque, gingival, and calculus indexes between diabetic and non-diabetic children. However, significant differences in DMFT indexes and salivary flow rates were noted. Poor glycemic control in diabetic children was linked to a higher risk of caries. Regular dental check-ups and stringent glycemic control were recommended for managing oral health in children with type 1 diabetes.
