UFP Exposure Linked to Increased Mortality Risk

The growing health concerns regarding outdoor exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) have led to substantial research, particularly on ultrafine particles (UFPs), which contribute to significant health risks. UFPs, primarily emitted from combustion sources such as roadway traffic, are implicated in oxidative stress, inflammation, and cardiovascular damage. Despite reductions in PM2.5, UFPs remain under-regulated due to a lack of real-world exposure data. A study by Lloyd and colleagues explored UFP exposure and its link to mortality outcomes in Montreal and Toronto between 2001 and 2016. They found a significant association between long-term exposure to UFPs and an increased mortality risk, particularly from respiratory causes, estimating that UFP pollution could account for 1,100 nonaccidental deaths annually.
