UK cost-effectiveness analysis of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty versus lifestyle modification alone for adults with class II obesity

A study has unveiled the significant cost-effectiveness of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) compared to lifestyle modification (LM) alone in adults with class II obesity (BMI 35.0–39.9 kg/m2). Results indicate that ESG, while incurring higher costs, leads to substantial and lasting weight loss, resulting in increased quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for ESG versus LM was £2453/QALY gained, remaining favorable across sensitivity analyses. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis affirms ESG's cost-effectiveness in 98.25% of iterations at a £20,000/QALY threshold. This groundbreaking research underscores ESG as a highly cost-effective treatment for class II obesity in England.
