Ultrasound Opens the Door for Gene Therapy in the Brain

Researchers have used low-intensity focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in non-human primates and individuals with Parkinson's disease. The approach was generally well-tolerated and did not result in abnormalities detectable with MRI. In non-human primates, a green fluorescent protein-expressing viral vector was administered intravenously following the ultrasound. The GFP was detected post-mortem in targeted brain regions, indicating that the approach could facilitate the delivery of gene therapies across the BBB.
