Undiagnosed Postpartum Hemorrhage: Blood Loss and Demographic Factors

Undiagnosed PPH remains common, especially among African American and Hispanic/Latina women. This study found that 78% of deliveries with >1000 mL blood loss were not diagnosed with PPH, including 84% of cesarean deliveries. Quantitative blood loss (QBL) was more accurate than estimated blood loss (EBL) for vaginal deliveries. PPH was linked to longer hospital stays and higher care costs. Demographic factors played a significant role in PPH diagnosis rates.
