Unsupervised physical activity interventions for people with COPD

This study explores the effectiveness of unsupervised physical activity (PA) interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management. Conducted at home, the interventions, mostly involving daily walking sessions, spanned 8-12 weeks. Results from 11 studies (900 participants) indicate significant improvements in emotional function, fatigue, quality of life, muscle strength, and anxiety/depression symptoms. Meta-analysis reveals statistically significant enhancements in dyspnoea and exercise capacity, suggesting unsupervised PA benefits COPD patients, ensuring safety and achieving high adherence. This alternative should be considered for individuals unwilling or unable to partake in supervised PA interventions.
