This study examines the impact of lumen roughness and urethral length on urinary flow speed. Using micro-computed tomography scans, the researchers measured lumen roughness and dimensions in rabbits, cats, and pigs. They created 3D-printed urethra mimics with varying roughness and length for flow experiments. A mathematical model was developed to explain the observed flow speed. The study also provides an updated relationship between body mass and urethra length and diameter, along with the relationship between lumen diameter and roughness along the urethra in the studied animals. The findings indicate that lumen roughness reduces flow speed by up to 25% compared to smooth urethras, and optimal flow occurs when urethra length exceeds 25 times its diameter.
