US FDA approves new therapy for myelodysplastic syndromes a rare form of blood cancers

The US FDA has approved Tibsovo (ivosidenib) for treating adult patients with relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) possessing an isocitrate dehydrogenase-1 (IDH1) mutation, a rare form of blood cancer. This marks the first targeted therapy for this condition. The approval includes the Abbott RealTime IDH1 Assay as a companion diagnostic for selecting MDS patients with the IDH1 mutation. MDS affects 60,000 to 170,000 Americans yearly, and Tibsovo, previously approved for other conditions, demonstrated significant efficacy. However, it has potential side effects like abnormal heart rhythms and differentiation syndrome, necessitating careful monitoring. The drug received Priority Review, Breakthrough Therapy, and Orphan Drug Designations.
