US FDA approves Opiant's spray for reversing opioid-related overdoses-ETHealthworld

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Opiant Pharmaceuticals Inc's nasal spray for reversing opioid-related overdoses. The spray, called Opvee, contains a drug called nalmefene and is more effective and longer-lasting than the commonly used medication naloxone. The approval of Opvee is expected to benefit British drugmaker Indivior, which recently acquired Opiant. The spray will be available by prescription for use in healthcare and community settings. This approval comes after the FDA allowed the prescription-free sale of Emergent Biosolutions' Narcan nasal spray, another medication for reversing opioid overdoses. Opioid-related overdoses have been a major public health crisis in the US, leading to the Biden Administration's efforts to increase access to overdose reversal medications.
