Use of digital measurement of medication adherence and lung function to guide the management of uncontrolled asthma (INCA Sun): a multicentre, single-blinded, randomised clinical trial

A study conducted across severe asthma clinics in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and England examined the clinical value of digital tools in managing uncontrolled asthma. The trial involved 213 participants with uncontrolled asthma who were randomly assigned to either an active group or a control group. The active group received treatment adjustments based on digitally acquired data on adherence, inhaler technique, peak flow, and patient-reported asthma control. The control group's treatment adjustments were based on traditional methods. The results showed that the active group had a lower proportion of patients requiring increased treatment, lower need for add-on biological therapy, and improved medication adherence compared to the control group. The study suggests that incorporating digital data into asthma management can lead to better outcomes and reduced treatment burden.
