The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the first oral antiviral pill, Paxlovid, manufactured by Pfizer, for the treatment of mild-to-moderate Covid-19 in adults at high risk of severe illness. Previously available under emergency use authorization (EUA), Paxlovid is the fourth medication and the first oral treatment approved by the FDA for Covid-19. With the transition of the pandemic into an endemic phase, oral treatments are seen as a potential game changer for managing milder infections. Generic versions of Paxlovid are also being manufactured by several companies globally, aiming to improve accessibility and availability of the antiviral.
