This study aimed to determine whether vaginal progesterone treatment reduces preterm birth rates in women with a short cervix diagnosed after 24 weeks of pregnancy. The retrospective cohort study found that women who received vaginal progesterone had a lower rate of preterm delivery before 37 weeks of pregnancy, a longer diagnosis-to-delivery interval, and a lower frequency of neonatal intensive care unit admission compared to those who did not receive progesterone. The study concludes that administering vaginal progesterone to women with threatened premature labor and a short cervix after 24 weeks of pregnancy is associated with lower rates of premature births.
