Valproic Acid Microemulsions for Hair Regeneration

Valproic Acid Microemulsions for Hair Regeneration

A recent study developed microemulsion (ME) formulations of valproic acid (VPA) for improved transfollicular delivery, with potential benefits for hair regeneration. The formulations, composed of oleic acid, transcutol P, and other surfactants, were evaluated for physicochemical properties, stability, and skin permeation using guinea pig skin models. The microemulsions, with droplet sizes between 10 and 24 nm, exhibited controlled drug release over 24 hours and demonstrated significantly enhanced VPA delivery through both follicular and nonfollicular skin pathways, outperforming aqueous VPA solutions. These results indicate that the ME formulations could offer a more effective topical treatment for conditions like hair loss.
