
This study examined crawling variability in infants with typical development (TD) compared to those with developmental delays. The infants were followed up after 2 years, and the crawling codes of TD infants and those with suspected developmental delay (SDD) were compared. The study found that TD infants who had experience with belly-crawling showed a decrease in variation in hands-and-knees crawling compared to those without belly-crawling experience. However, this trend was not observed in infants with SDD. TD infants also exhibited more variable limb movement timing during belly-crawling than infants with SDD. The study suggests that variability throughout the crawling period is important, and the development of an efficient diagonal gait is crucial for crawling variability and subsequent development, particularly in infants at risk of developmental delay.
