Vascular-targeted Photodynamic Therapy Offers New Hope for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma Patients

The study evaluated the safety of using vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy with WST-11 in the treatment of upper tract urothelial carcinoma. Nineteen patients underwent up to two treatments with increasing laser light fluence, with the primary endpoint being to identify the maximally tolerated dose. Fourteen patients received the maximally tolerated dose of 200 mW/cm, with a 94% initial treatment response rate. The leading toxicities were flank pain and hematuria, but these were transient, and no ureteral strictures were identified during follow-up. The study concludes that vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy with WST-11 has an acceptable safety profile and potential as an effective endoscopic management option for upper tract urothelial carcinoma.
