
The article discusses the role of the two-component signal transduction system (TCSTS) VicRK in regulating the virulence of Streptococcus mutans, a major cause of dental caries. The study found that overexpression of vicR led to abnormal biofilm formation, increased cell chain length, and increased production of mutacins in aerobic conditions. The overexpression strain was also more competitive against Streptococcus gordonii, and the expression of vicR was positively correlated with competitive ability in clinical strains. The article concludes that VicRK is important for regulating S. mutans cell morphology, biofilm formation, and mutacin production, and that VicR directly regulates the production of mutacins NlmD.
