Researchers have studied the impact of maternal vitamin D deficiency on growing neurons and found that it influenced the early development and later differentiation of dopaminergic neurons. The active vitamin D hormone increased dopamine neurite outgrowth and altered the distribution of presynaptic proteins responsible for dopamine release. They concluded that vitamin D plays a crucial role in dopaminergic neuron morphological development, potentially contributing to dopamine dysfunction in schizophrenia. Further investigations will explore how other environmental risk factors may affect dopamine neuron differentiation.
