Volumetric changes and graft stability after lateral window sinus floor augmentation

A recent study compared the stability and volumetric changes of grafting materials for Lateral Window Sinus Floor Augmentation (LWSFA). The investigation included 16 patients with a total of 20 maxillary sinuses. Two groups were analyzed: Group 1 received 100% anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM), while Group 2 received a mixture of ABBM and mineralized cortical allograft (MCA). Results showed no significant difference between the two groups in terms of mean reduction of bone graft volume. However, the study highlighted a significant increase in Schneiderian membrane thickness (SMT) after 2 weeks, more pronounced in Group 1. Sinus width demonstrated a weak positive correlation with height reduction after 6 months. Conclusively, the study demonstrated that both ABBM alone and ABBM + MCA are viable options for LWSFA, exhibiting similar volumetric and linear dimensional changes 6 months post-surgery. This research has significant implications for the field of sinus augmentation.
