VTE Lowers Survival in ALK-Positive Lung Cancer

The study found that venous thromboembolic events (VTE) in ALK-positive lung cancer patients significantly impacted survival. Among the 54 patients (median age 60), 12 (22.2%) developed VTE, with pulmonary embolism (PE) as the most common type. VTE occurrence was linked to shorter overall survival (OS), with patients experiencing VTE showing a median OS of 11.7 months compared to 37.4 months for those without VTE (p=0.003). Additionally, VTE and PE increased all-cause mortality risk (HR=3.47 and HR=2.41, respectively). Crizotinib and alectinib treatments notably raised VTE risk, as did liver metastases and high leukocyte counts. While the Khorana score (≥3) predicted OS, it was not a predictor for VTE. This association between VTE and lower OS underscores the need for targeted monitoring and interventions in this patient group.
