
Wearable devices, such as smartwatches and activity trackers, are increasingly used by patients to manage their health and collect continuous data on behavioral or physiologic function. This data can give clinicians a more comprehensive view of a patient's health. They can have a range of clinical applications, including arrhythmia screening and remote management of chronic conditions. However, the widespread use of wearable devices in clinical care requires a multifaceted approach with collaboration among key stakeholders. This review summarizes the features of wearable devices, associated machine learning techniques, key research studies on their use in cardiovascular medicine, and challenges hindering their widespread use. It also provides short- and long-term solutions to promote the increased use of wearable devices in clinical care.
