Why Eating More Cereal Could Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

This study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary fiber intake and the risk of diabetes, particularly from different food sources such as cereal, fruit, and vegetables. The study included 39,185 participants with a mean follow-up of 13.8 years. The results showed that total fiber intake was not associated with diabetes risk, but a higher intake of cereal fiber was protective against diabetes, while fruit and vegetable fiber showed no significant association. The study suggests that specific recommendations regarding dietary fiber intake from specific sources may be needed to prevent diabetes. Body mass index was found to mediate the relationship between fiber and diabetes risk.
