The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant decline in childhood vaccinations, including for vulnerable newborns, which could threaten the progress made in child health and survival rates over the past three decades. There is an urgent need to catch up on the missed vaccinations and restore routine immunization programs to avoid outbreaks of diseases like measles, yellow fever, and polio. HPV vaccination rates in teenagers and young adults have also fallen. Strengthening life-course immunization programs beyond childhood vaccines is vital for future pandemic preparedness and global health security, and vaccines are one of the world's most powerful and cost-effective public health tools.
