Working under the sun causes 1 in 3 deaths from non-melanoma skin cancer, say WHO and ILO

One in three deaths from non-melanoma skin cancer is linked to outdoor work, reveals joint estimates by the WHO and the International Labour Organization. The study discloses that 28% of global working-age individuals, approximately 1.6 billion people, were exposed to harmful solar radiation in 2019. Nearly 19,000 deaths in 183 countries that year were attributed to such exposure, with 65% being male. The WHO emphasizes preventive measures, urging governments and employers to implement policies safeguarding outdoor workers, such as shade provision, altered working hours, and education.
