The prevalent strain in central India is Omicron's highly transmissible XBB variant, as per the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia (Insacog) data from the third week of 2023. Madhya Pradesh has reported a rise in Covid-19 infections since then, but state-specific data is challenging to obtain. Health officials have considered the current case spike to be of academic interest rather than a threat. Government hospitals are gearing up to handle an increase in OPD patients in "fever clinics," but current data does not indicate the severity of the illness caused by the variant. None of the Covid-19-infected patients has required hospitalization.
